Practicing Safe Knitting

Recently found these colourful vintage plastic knitting needles and case at the local antiques centre. The brand labeling on one set of needles is rather intriguing...a quick search on Google revealed only this page with information dating back to 1929. The needle case is made by Bex in England. It might be Bakelite, there's this page, How do you know it's Bakelite with a whole list of tests to do (haven't started on this yet). There's a measure along one side of the box in inches and a needle gauge on the other in imperial. Does any one have a similar box? Anyone have more information? No rude comments please!

I inherited some Durex knitting needles from my grandma. I have a few sets in a variety of colours. I love them. They're hilarious.

I think my mother had a box like that when I was a teenager (which means she probably still has it 30 years later!). I think it came from her mother or possibly one of her aunts (all born in the late 1890s) but I'm afraid I don't know anything about its life before it came to our house.

I used to hate it - it was that really horrible bakelite brown; yours is a much nicer colour.

Intriguing indeed! I think I might have a couple of sets of those. There seem to be some similar needles & boxes on eBay and they're being sold as Bakelite. (I typed 'bex knitting' into the search).

What a great find though! Shaz x
